Medicaid Now Covers Community Based
Palliative Care in Hawaii

Hawai‘i is the first state to offer Medicaid coverage for community-based palliative care—expanding access to specialized support for people with serious illnesses who don’t yet qualify for hospice.

Unlike hospice, palliative care can begin at any stage of illness and alongside curative treatments. It focuses on relieving symptoms, managing pain, and supporting physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

At Hospice Maui, we provide expert symptom management, caregiver support, and compassionate care. With Medicaid now covering palliative care, more individuals in our community can receive the help they need—without financial barriers.

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative Care is specialized medical care focused on improving the quality of life for those with a serious illness. A team of healthcare professionals address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.

Palliative care relieves symptoms related to illness, enhances comfort, and supports patients in making decisions aligned with their goals. It can be provided alongside curative treatments at any stage of a serious illness and is not limited by prognosis or age.
