General Overview

Our volunteers participate in nearly every area of our operation.  At our office, they answer the telephone, file papers and records, help with mailings, and clean equipment such as wheelchairs.  In Hospice Maui's community involvement, our volunteers are an integral part of our special projects such as our Annual Memorial Day Service, our annual and miscellaneous other fundraisers, and community events.  One thing is certain about Hospice Maui volunteers:  no matter where they serve, our volunteers serve with their hearts.  Nowhere is this more evident than with our Patient Care and our Bereavement volunteers.

Patient Care Volunteers

Our patient care volunteers give of their time, their energy, and their hearts.  Practical help that makes a positive difference to patients and caregivers is provided by volunteers when they visit.  This assistance runs the gamut from helping feed patients to taking them to appointments, to sitting quietly with them, to doing light shopping or errands, to giving respite to the caregivers.

Bereavement Volunteers

In October 2005, the conclusion of 12 hours of training added several new bereavement volunteers to Hospice Maui's ranks.  Actually, nearly every one of these "new" volunteers has already been involved with Hospice Maui, many as patient care volunteers.  A bereavement volunteer maintains a close working relationship with the loved ones of the person who has died.   For about a year after the death, these volunteers call regularly, send cards, and do what they can to help ease the transition from the death of a loved one to a renewal of hope and future.

Training

Patient care volunteers receive 30 hours of training.  The excellent training they receive is rewarding, yet is emotionally intense.  For numerous Hospice Maui volunteers, the experience is the beginning of a life-long passion for volunteering.  In addition to the initial 30 hours of training, our bereavement volunteers complete an additional 12 hours of training.

"How can I become a Hospice Maui volunteer?"

It's as easy as it is rewarding.  If you would like to be included in our next volunteer training, please call Hospice Maui at 244-5555.
