Enchanted, we gaze at the beautifully delicate flutter of butterfly wings...
At this peaceful and fleeting moment, someone we hold dear
could be about to leave this earth...
Before this soul flies away,
it is our calling to bring it joy.

~ Phillip Jarosz & Greg LaGoy

Community Outreach

Hospice Maui participates in a variety of ways and events each year on issues concerning our aging population, pain relief, and hospice services.

Staff members speak at various local businesses and organizations. We attend community events and health fairs. We serve on boards and committees related to aging and palliative and hospice care. We attend seminars and workshops to en hance our knowledge and skills. We provide one-on-one counseling. We host support groups for those affected by suicide.

Committed efforts to staff and public education help us help persons coping with terminal illnesses plan better, and come to us sooner, for quality end-of-life care.

For more information on speakers for your business or organization, call us at 244-5555.

Celebration of Life

A special service to honor loved ones who have died is held each year close to the Memorial Day Weekend at Keawalai Church in Makena. The quaint church’s peaceful grounds and the all-encompassing ocean nearby provide a splendid setting for this occasion.

Quiet chamber music and poetry readings and other reflections are presented. The names of all those who have died – hospice patients for the year, and other names as provided by the public – are read slowly with great respect, and a chime is sounded after each name. Doves are released at the end of the service. Attendees then enjoy refreshments and talk story time.

And even in our sleep, pain that cannot
forget falls drop by drop upon the
heart, and in our own despair, against
our will, comes wisdom to us by the
awful grace of God. ~ Aeschylus
