Frequently Asked Questions
Who Can Make A Referral?
Anyone can make a referral: physicians, family members, patients, and friends can call Hospice. Hospice will gather information and then contact the physician to ensure that hospice care is appropriate. A nurse and a social worker will then schedule a home visit to explain services, assess specific needs, and answer any questions.
Are hospice patients still cared for by their own physicians?
Yes. The physician works with the hospice team and the hospice physician, who serves as a back-up.
What happens if help is needed between visits or after hours?
Patients and their loved ones are never alone during this difficult time. A hospice nurse is always just a phone call away.
Who pays for hospice care?
The major health insurers in Hawai‘i, including HMSA, Kaiser, Medicare, and Medicaid, all cover hospice services. Hospice Maui provides care to all those who are eligible regardless of whether or not they have insurance or the ability to pay. When there is no source of payment, Hospice Maui uses funds from community donations to help cover the cost of care.
What is not covered?
Treatment that focuses on cure or extending life, and diagnostic procedures that are not needed for comfort care.
Is there help for grieving family members?
Yes. Grief is a natural and necessary process that is different for each person. It can be intensely painful and difficult. Hospice Maui's bereavement program includes weekly support groups, individualized cards and letters, a monthly newsletter, an annual Memorial Day service, and an annual workshop around the Holidays.
